Get QuoteGeneral liability insurance
What is general liability insurance for contractors?
It pays for claims from other people, such as customers, visitors and neighbors, for bodily injury or property damage caused by your work. It also pays your legal defense costs.
What does it cover on a job?
Examples include a customer who is hurt on a job site, a tool that damages a neighbor's property, or damage that shows up after a job is finished. Exact coverage depends on your policy.
Do Tennessee contractors need it?
Many project owners, general contractors and cities ask for proof of general liability before you can start work, even where no law requires it.
Workers' compensation insurance
What is workers' compensation?
It pays medical bills and part of lost wages for employees hurt on the job, and it generally protects you from injury lawsuits by those employees.
Does my Tennessee contracting business need it?
Tennessee generally requires employers with employees to carry it, and construction businesses are held to a lower headcount than other industries. Rules for owners, sole proprietors and subcontractors vary, so ask us to confirm yours.
What if I hire subcontractors?
If a subcontractor has no coverage, you can end up responsible for their injured workers. Ask every sub for a certificate of insurance.
Commercial auto insurance
Why do I need commercial auto if I have personal auto?
Personal auto policies often exclude business use, such as hauling tools and materials or driving between job sites.
What does commercial auto cover?
Liability if you cause an accident, and damage to your work trucks, vans and trailers, depending on the coverage you choose.
Umbrella and excess liability insurance
What is umbrella insurance?
It adds extra liability limits on top of your general liability, auto and similar policies, so one large claim doesn't wipe out your business.
When do contractors need it?
Larger contracts often require higher limits than a standard policy provides. An umbrella is usually the lower-cost way to reach them.
Tools and equipment insurance
What does tools and equipment insurance cover?
It covers theft, damage and loss of your tools and equipment on job sites and in transit.
Doesn't general liability cover my tools?
No. General liability covers claims from other people, not your own property. Tools and equipment coverage fills that gap.
Cyber insurance
What is cyber insurance?
It helps pay for the costs of a data breach, ransomware attack or funds-transfer fraud, including notifying customers and restoring systems.
Does a small contractor need cyber insurance?
If you email invoices, take online payments or store customer and bank information, you're exposed. Small businesses are common targets.
Bonds and insurance
What is the difference between a bond and insurance?
Insurance protects you from losses. A bond protects your customers and the state, and you reimburse the surety if a claim is paid. Most contractors need both.
Can you help with both?
Yes. We write Tennessee contractor bonds and contractor insurance, so you can handle both in one place.
